Balance For Life

Balance is complex. It's affected by the systems governing your vision, inner ear, muscles, joints, and brain. The successful interaction of these systems depends on mobility in all three planes of motion, and three-dimensional action often becomes limited with age. We can help you counteract these limitations and adopt more functionally efficient movement patterns.

In the beginning of 2020, Paul McAndrew and Jacob Tyson (doctoral physical therapy student) teamed up with the vision of creating a balance program for The Wellness Station. Their goal was to develop a program that integrated Feldenkrais Method®, physical therapy, and yoga in a creative and supportive environment using the aerial silks and other state of the art equipment. This program was called Balance for Life, and included six initial participants. The silks were a fundamental aspect of the program, as they allow free and unrestricted movement while also providing support and protection from falling.

Aerial movement with silks is a modality to complement and, for me, replace yoga. While being supported as much or as little as needed, it gives the benefits of movement, balance and strengthening exercises.”

Unfortunately, after initiating the program, COVID-19 began to take hold, and Balance for Life had to be reconsidered. Paul and Jacob were disappointed that they would not be able to conduct the program in the supportive group environment that they envisioned. They began to brainstorm how they could continue to serve the participants throughout the challenging time, and decided that they would change the program into a virtual format. They began to send balance lessons to the participants using YouTube and audio files, and conducted regular conference calls and email discussions.

In order to continue the momentum of the program and provide helpful resources regarding balance, I will be posting some information and videos on this topic.
